The Apothecarium

A Cannabis Bauhaus

The Apothecarium – San Francisco, CA

The Place

Visiting The Apothecarium feels like stepping into a den of herbal elixirs located in a future-forward Barbary library. Everyone is welcome. Central to San Francisco, the shop attracts mostly locals of the Castro and Mid-Market communities. Visitors can browse designer glass, a cannabis bibliothèque and an art gallery while being checked in. The space is open, though corridors create a feeling of multiple rooms. A specialist escorted me to the counter for consultation. Walking up, my head turned in every direction to gaze at the beveled edges of décor. The compartmentalized menu boasts detailed options for flower, concentrates, edibles and topicals. 4/20 at The Apothecarium is a festive affair with deals, a raffle and vendors onsite. Come early to avoid lines!

The History

Mid-Market has historically been central to gender equality and sex rights activism. Family-founded, The Apothecarium opened in 2011, and since opening they’ve raised over $350,000 for community organizations. Many of their patients face symptoms of PTSD, anxiety or HIV/AIDS. Director of Education Sara Payan explained that, despite legalization in January, “75-80 percent of people are still asking for [medical] consultations.” Prior to recreational legalization, becoming a cannabis patient took courage. Many felt insecure having their name on a government list, creating limited access to necessary medicine due to fear.

The People

Consultants are engaged with patients behind the bar “so we can convey our relations with cannabis and enable people’s access,” notes Payan. Eliot Dobris, Head of Marketing and Communications, added that caretaking opens “more enabled sharing.” I stood at The Apothecarium counter and lost track of time talking with the consultants, sharing our therapeutic and social experiences using cannabis. “We really foster one-on-one conversations,” proclaims Eliot. “The design of the store is about that. We have lots of questions to ask to find out what’s right for you.” The Apothecarium offers both doctor and health professional tours. You can visit The Apothecarium in Las Vegas and any of their three San Francisco locations: Castro, South of Market and the Marina.

Ashleigh Castro

Ashleigh Castro is a New York seed grown in the California sunshine. A photographer by nature, she developed while capturing peace rallies in San Francisco and snapping shots of musicians. She started at DOPE taking photos for DOPE Magazine as it launched in Northern California in 2015. Aesthetically, her favorite medium to shoot in is film such as 35mm and medium format. Since she studied journalism, she put her DOPEn to the paper and started writing stories about healing family through cannabis, sustainably sourced edibles and consciously created local products. Having developed obscure food allergies caused by histamine intolerance, she applies cannabis to alleviate the symptoms of chronic pain, inflammation and the anxieties surrounding food intolerance. Now managing the NorCal office as well as the area’s content, you can find her on the scene with the DOPE squad or roller skating in the Bay Area’s scenic spots. Her greatest joy working at DOPE is being able to help found a Dream Team of talent and style.
