Cinder Downtown – Spokane, WA

Cinder’s downtown Spokane shop has a comfortable vibe. It isn’t in the most scenic part of downtown — the famous Riverfront Park red wagon, Looff Carrousel and high-end retail shopping zone are more than a mile away — so the location’s ambiance is more “easy access to the freeway” than anything else. But the store, which opened in 2017, is a nice refuge at any time of day. The building dates back to the 1920s and has been just about everything over the years, including a two-story tire warehouse. But owner and Cinder CEO Justin Peterson put substantial effort into designing a warm, welcoming establishment for his third Cinder store, including lots of oak, visible brick and exposed beams, which create a nice aesthetic and display a good mix of easy-to-see products.

District manager Becca Johnson said about 16 budtenders work out of the downtown shop, and there’s little turnover. Because of the varied downtown clientele, she hires people who enjoy talking to everyone and who are genuinely interested in helping any and every demographic –— “You don’t have to be ‘cool,’” Johnson notes. Part of the Cinder philosophy is to make everyone comfortable, as well as provide the same seamless experience and inventory whether they’re visiting the downtown, Spokane Valley or North Division Cinder locations.

There’s sometimes a misconception that if a store looks high-end, it means they only stock top-shelf products — Johnson says that’s far from the truth at Cinder. They make sure to offer something for every budget, age and customer demand, from $10 eighths to $45 eighths, plus a wide range of cartridges, concentrates, edibles, vapes and wellness brands. “Some stores around us have eighths in the $60 range,” Johnson explains, “so we really try to make sure that we’re never expensive and that everyone can find something they need.”
