Den-Rec — Denver, CO

I was welcomed to Denver Recreational (aka Den-Rec) by part owner and lead grower Ryan Buffkin, a cultivation connoisseur with almost a decade of industry experience. Buffkin, along with his second-in-command Fallon McCaskill, has won over 40 (and counting) awards for the dispensary’s flower since taking over the grow about three years ago. Regarding the rest of the team, I couldn’t imagine a friendlier, more knowledgeable group of people.

Den-Rec has been a staple in the neighborhood for locals, natives and tourists alike since opening in 2009. Located in the heart of downtown, it’s the kind of place you pass multiple times a day without even realizing it. It’s just down the block from popular brunch restaurant Snooze, an A.M. Eatery — you can’t miss the Den-Rec sign as you’re coming down Larimer Street. The space is small, but the service is extremely efficient. Even with a high volume of foot traffic, customers were in and out in a matter of minutes. The clean and straightforward environment testifies that they aren’t concerned about the bells and whistles, just providing the best flower possible.

So, what does it take to win nearly 50 awards for their strains in less than three years? Growing some of the best damn flower in town. Den-Rec carries an average of 40 strains at all times, all of which are grown from seed and held to the grow team’s meticulous standards. A few of their current most popular strains include Cookie Dough, Granola Funk, Pure Kush, Four Kings and Holy Grail Kush. Even though cannabis is the star of the show at Den-Rec, you can still find a superb selection of edibles and concentrates, including brands like Green Dot Labs, Lazercat and 710 Labs.

Melissa was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, where she couldn’t stay out of trouble for smoking weed--especially during college. Immediately after graduating with a business degree from Elmhurst College in 2012, Melissa made her way to the safe smoking haven of Colorado, where her love for live music and music blogging eventually led her to a part-time writing position with DOPE Magazine. Melissa enjoys medicating with indica-dominant hybrids, and will never say no to a big solventless glob. When she isn’t busy writing, Melissa loves spending her time in the mountains with friends, practicing her violin, and exploring the never-ending amounts of dank breweries and restaurants in Denver.
