The future of cannabis is female! December is DOPE Magazine’s Women’s Issue, and we wanted to continue to highlight women across the industry on all our platforms. We sent a questionnaire to outstanding women in cannabis—some familiar to us, some new—and will be showcasing their answers in individual blogs this month. Check out our December Mag for more profiles of the badass women you need to know! Today’s story highlights Diane Czarkowski, Founding Partner of Canna Advisors.

Q: Who are some of your greatest role models?

A: My mother, by far, is my most influential role model. She is the matriarch of our family. She immigrated from Latvia during WWII at the age of 16. She has overcome so much. Her will, spirit and kindness are boundless. I have also had the opportunity to work with some amazing women in business that have acted as role models to me.

Q: What’s your go-to self-care routine?

A: A hot bath or hot yoga class. Being outdoors.

Q: Favorite “guilty pleasure”?

A: Having popcorn for dinner while watching a movie and eating candy. Oh, and pop music.

Q: How do you feel about the industry-wide assertion that cannabis is a female-friendly space?

A: There are certain areas that are more female-friendly than others. I am very pleased that the cannabis industry has a high percentage of women in leadership positions, but that percentage is dropping, and that is concerning. I’d like to see more female cultivators; females running cultivation operations. I’d like to see more females in extraction and science positions. We also have to work to bring those candidates in from other industries and to give those pursuing relevant degrees an understanding of the wide varieties of careers that are available in the cannabis industry.

Q: As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A: I wanted to be an international flight attendant, then an international fashion buyer.

Q: What advice do you have for other women looking to get into the cannabis space?

A: Talk to a lot of people and do a lot of research before you get started. Understand your tolerance for constant change and uncertainty and risk. Do something that suits your interests and talents. Don’t expect things to work out as you expect. Be fluid in your plans.

Q: Recommend an album you think everyone should read/listen to/watch while stoned!

A: You should listen to your favorite album while stoned. I love listening to music, and if I’m high, I often notice different things about a song I hadn’t noticed before.

Q: What’s your favorite cannabis product? (And you can’t list one of your own, if you’re a grower/producer!)

A: My favorite, hands down, is Julie’s Natural Edibles Roasted Seed Mix. It’s one of the few edibles out there that’s not sweet and you can eat an entire handful. Most edibles are too strong for me and I have to break off a sliver for the right dose. What’s satisfying about that?!

Q: Fill in the blank: I could never live without ________

A: My family.

Q: What’s your smoking/cannabis consumption ritual, if you do partake in cannabis?

A: My most consistent cannabis ritual is to smoke flower (heavy indica) before I go to bed. It helps me sleep and helps me to shut off my overthinking brain.
