Groundswell – Denver, CO
I’ve been a fan of GroundSwell since we featured their dispensary last year. I was instantly won over by the interior of the store, the kind and knowledgeable staff and, of course, the weed. This year, we were given the grand tour by Rodney Coquia, longtime music industry veteran and head of operations at GroundSwell’s garden. Coquia mentioned the turnover rate at the grow facility is extremely low, and that everyone on the staff is a tight-knit crew. It was a treat to meet part of the team and to observe the fruits of their labor.
GroundSwell currently cultivates about 20 strains at a time, harvesting one of their 13 growing containers every week. A few of their most popular strains include New York Diesel and Purple Cotton, as well as musical collaboration strains with DJ Logic (Logic Diesel) and Oteil Burbridge (Oteil’s Egyptian Kush). We checked out the drying containers, which housed all the hanging and curing flower; the freshly cured Tangie and Golden Goat strains left me salivating. All the plants we saw, from the vegetation to the flowering rooms, looked happy and healthy. Even hours later, my nose still tingles from the pungent flowers.
Previously used as a hydroponics grow, GroundSwell managed to swoop in on this coveted storage container space, ultimately ripping out everything and starting a new garden from scratch. They wanted their herb to be soil-grown — as all quality flower should be, in my opinion — and took zero shortcuts while turning these containers into facilitators of some of Denver’s best small-batch, boutique-style marijuana. One of their latest developments is the implementation of a vertical garden method, which optimizes growing space, ensures 360-degree LED light coverage, and allows them to ultimately double their yield while decreasing electricity use.
