Help Shake Off the Shackles for National Expungement Week

Published

on

The troubling origins of cannabis prohibition mirror the everlasting discriminatory effects of the “War on Drugs” today. National Expungement Week (N.E.W.) is “powered by people with color,” with the determination to help those affected by discriminatory laws that put people behind bars for consuming a harmless plant.

N.E.W.’s third annual week to seal and clear records will take place on September 19-26, 2020. Now’s your chance to put forth a small donation towards their efforts to assist people with clearing their records.

Despite dozens of states enacting various levels of ending prohibition of medical and recreational cannabis, people facing cannabis-related charges are still haunted with felonies and misdemeanors with real life consequences.

Cage-Free Repair—the nonprofit arm of Cage-Free Cannabis—launched SHOW YOUR LOVE this month, a campaign to raise funds for N.E.W. to help clear or reduce records for cannabis charges.

Individuals can donate directly to the cause, and businesses are invited to take part in the fundraiser through the SHOW YOUR LOVE digital marketplace. To participate as “Creators,” businesses can connect with N.E.W. by August 22 to set aside products so that a share of the profits go towards 2020 expungement week clinics and year-round criminal justice reform efforts.

“A criminal record creates more than 48,000 barriers to a person’s life. Clearing records allows for millions of Americans to once again access opportunity and our wrap-around services seek to offer support through this process.”

“Relief services often require fees to be paid, in some cases these fees exceed $450,” said N.E.W. co-founding organizer James Watts in a press release.  “N.E.W. is focused on raising these funds to pay these fees and better serve our communities.”

Business that become “Creators” are encouraged to show their followers that they are a part of the campaign by using the hashtag #ShowNEWLove

“A criminal record creates more than 48,000 barriers to a person’s life,” added Watts. “Clearing records allows for millions of Americans to once again access opportunity and our wrap-around services seek to offer support through this process.”

The SHOW YOUR LOVE fundraiser for N.E.W. takes place from now through September 26. To be a part of this fundraising effort, please visit cagefreerepair.wedid.it or contact [email protected] to participate in the N.E.W. digital marketplace.
