“I’ve pretty much been in this building every day since September of 2015,” declares Evan Marder, president of Matrix. “But I’m living the dream. It’s work, but it’s not work. If you enjoy what you do, you’re not working at all.” Marder moved to Las Vegas to manage a restaurant on the Strip, but when Nevada began its medical cannabis program, he saw an opportunity to turn his avocational cannabis cultivation into a full-time career.

The Place

Both the grow and the production facility are housed in a large warehouse north of Las Vegas. Blue and green hallways — the colors of Matrix’s distinctive packaging — connect grow rooms, storage spaces and the production area. Around a new, “explosion-proof” butane extractor standing in the center of the production area, employees gaze intently at beakers, stacking boxes of PAX Extract Pods. “Our oil is superior to the majority of what’s out there,” boasts Marder. “We pull the terpenes off the plant through CO2 and then reintroduce it into the oil. Nobody else does that. They buy food-grade terpenes off the internet … We don’t do that. We use the actual terpenes from the actual plant.”

The Product

In addition to growing flower, Matrix produces cartridges, crumble, budders, shatter, PAX Extract Pods and disposable vapes found in many dispensaries across Nevada. The 20 or so strains currently in production include Do-Si-Dos, Tangilope and Jane Snow. “Sugar Tits is our most popular strain,” Marder notes. According to him, the name was designed to draw attention to quality weed. “The cannabis was so good that I wanted to give it a name that just made you look at it.”

“We’re constantly hunting new genetics, new strains. We’re looking for stuff that’s going to be higher in THC, but something that’s very important to us is cannabinoids and terpenes,” he continues. “What people don’t really realize is that terpenes are equally as important — in a way, they’re a conduit for the cannabinoids to affect you … something that is 18 percent THC with a really good terpene profile will give you a better high and a better feeling than something with 30 percent THC and no terpenes.”
