The future of cannabis is female! December is DOPE Magazine’s Women’s Issue, and we wanted to continue to highlight women across the industry on all of our platforms. We sent a questionnaire to outstanding women in cannabis—some familiar to us, some new—and will be showcasing their answers in individual blogs this month. Today’s story highlights Maureen McNamara, founder and chief facilitator of Cannabis Trainers.
DOPE Magazine: Who are some of your greatest role models?
Maureen McNamara: The parents that are fighting for their children’s wellness and the right to use cannabis as medicine. I see a level of passion and badassery here that is extraordinary!
What’s something someone would never guess about you?
People may never guess that I have an introverted side.
What’s your go-to self-care routine?
Hiking or walking! If it is at least 35 degrees (preferably higher) I love to be at the trail head just before sunrise. Hiking is a mind clearing, heart pumping way to release the stress and be reminded of the value of letting go.
Favorite “guilty pleasure”?
Bring on the limitless access to Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food ice cream. Or, I may shake it up and sub in some chocolate and peanut butter gelato.
How do you feel about the industry-wide assertion that cannabis is a female-friendly space?
I think the cannabis space is generally friendly. I think there is room for improvement for many organizations to walk the talk and ensure that women are in leadership roles. I also think that, as female leaders, we need to make requests and/or demands for inclusivity. I certainly endeavor to be the invitation for more and more women to join the industry and bring their wisdom and insight.
As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I don’t recall having a vision for a specific career path. If I popped into a time machine and went back 20 years to my five year old self we would declare that we want to be JOYFUL when we grow up. And to not lie about our age.
If you could talk to yourself five years ago, what advice would you give?
This is going to be a fun adventure. Ask for more help along the way!
What advice do you have for other women looking to get into the cannabis space?
Don’t wait for an invitation. Create a space for yourself! If there doesn’t appear to be space in your favorite organization, ensure they know how invaluable you are. Oh, hello lady boss … feel free to start your own company!
Best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
“Just start doing your work.” This advice came at a pivotal moment when I started working for myself. I have many times since invited others to follow this wisdom. Just start. You can DO THIS!
What’s your favorite cannabis product?
Sweet Grass Kitchen Chocolate Chip Cookies. They are delicious and consistently bring me joy.
What’s the one thing you would bring if you were stranded on a desert island?
If we are expansive with the definition of “thing” I would bring a person to amuse and delight me and make an airplane out of sand, bark and hope.
Fill in the blank:
I could never live without: Laughter!
What’s your smoking/cannabis consumption ritual, if you do partake in cannabis?
I am generally hesitant to smoke cannabis. Why? Having a flame that close to my face seems to go against my human instincts to setting myself on fire.
