Moon Made Farms – Southern Humboldt County, CA
Located in Southern Humboldt 33.3 linear miles from the ocean, Moon Made Farms has primarily southern exposure and sits at 2,100 feet in elevation leeward of a mountain nestled in an evanescent oak grove with red, white and live oak, some madrone and bay. “The natural forces that influence and shape the ecosystem have a direct effect on all forms of life here on the mountain, including cannabis,” says Founder Tina Gordon.
Gordon has a diverse background in underground culture, outside of being a cultivator, including work as a musician, producer, event promoter and documentary filmmaker. Humboldt called her to move from San Francisco and soon after she serendipitously bought property that would eventually become her new home. She purchased the property from a dear friend and fellow drummer Joani Hannan, the subject of Gordon’s documentary “Joani: Queen of the Paradiddle.” She set out to develop what was Hannan’s homestead into a farm and center for cannabis innovation.
Moon Made Farms’s flower is distributed by Flow Kana who collaborates with partners including Brother David’s and Willie’s Reserve to bring sun grown cannabis to market. Gordon is also a business partner at the Vapor Room. “I’m fully aware that it’s a privilege to cultivate cannabis outside in full sun. [A privilege] that not everybody has,” says Gordon. “There are many people incarcerated for cannabis and no clear pathway to provide compassion for those who need it most … this is bullshit, and it needs to change.”
Ancient farming techniques such as lunar farming and regenerative practices guide Moon Made Farms through growth cycles. “We embrace ancient technologies like adhering to a moon schedule for germinating seeds, seed propagation, planting, transplanting, sowing seeds, watering and [determining] when to harvest,” says Gordon. Organic practices yield terpene rich results. One of Moon Made Farms’ newest strains called Cosmic is a 1:1 CBD flower released with Brother David’s. Those in the mood for a sweet and earthy strain may gravitate toward Pineapple Wonder, a sativa dominant strain cultivated for Margo Price with uplifting, weightless effects. Additional collaborations include providing cultivar to award-winning extractors Chemistry and Blue River.
