Mother Earth Farms – Port Angeles, WA

When I asked Drew Dean about his first time growing cannabis, his story started off similar to most — finding some seeds as a teenager, tossing them in a pot with some soil and tucking it away. Once Dean’s hidden gem turned up missing, however, things took a slightly abnormal turn; his aunt had transplanted his cannabis with her tomatoes! Dean told me this was a bit of a turning point for his family, one that shifted their perspective of cannabis from a drug that could be used to a plant that could be cultivated. Dean started seeking out cuts of local exotic strains to cultivate and eventually brought his passion for the cannabis plant to the small team at Mother Earth Farms, where he’s currently head grower.

The Place

Located near the western tip of Washington state on the outskirts of a small town called Port Angeles, Mother Earth Farms is a Tier III producer with a small staff of 10 employees and four owners. After a few minor hiccups and a full build at a new location, they’re running two 3,000-square-foot greenhouses with a total of roughly 1,100 plants. I asked co-owner Julian Berlove how he came up with the company name, and as he tells it, “I was looking for a name that would not obviously be a cannabis company, but once you realized it was, things just clicked — and it sounded pretty cool.” Berlove told me that MEF would like to step away from the “stoner” vibe many cannabis companies still harbor, as well as present a unique product with exotic genetics and terpene profiles to not only get you high as a kite, but offer a full-bodied smoking experience.

The Product

Dean’s “raw organic gardening” approach is the key to MEF’s incredibly terpy buds. I asked Dean what he meant by this term and, simply put, he told me it signifies that just him and one other person tend to each and every plant. Dean was unwilling to change his organic nutrient mix in order to introduce an automated drip system, and the proof is in the pudding (err, ash?). Be on the lookout for MEF’s bud, pre-rolls, concentrates and cartridges in crazy strains like Donkey Butter, Jackdawg, Cinnapple, Lemon Meringue, Purple Punch, White Tahoe Cookies and some up-and-comers including Stir Fry, Spray Tan and Bahama Mama.
