The future of cannabis is female! December is DOPE Magazine’s Women’s Issue, and we wanted to continue to highlight women across the industry on all our platforms. We sent a questionnaire to outstanding women in cannabis—some familiar to us, some new—and will be showcasing their answers in individual blogs this month. Check out our December Mag for more profiles of the badass women you need to know! Today’s story highlights Nancy Whiteman, Co-owner of Wana Brands.

Q: What are the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your career?

A: The biggest challenge I’ve faced in my career is hitting a sweet spot between where the market is going and where it is today, so that Wana Brands products address the needs of today while preparing for the future. Another big challenge is finding good partners for expansion into other markets, both nationally and internationally.

Q: What’s something someone would never guess about you?

 A: Most people who meet me wouldn’t guess I’m in the cannabis industry…except my friends from my youth, who suspected that I would have ended up in this industry.

 Q: What’s your go-to self-care routine?

A: My go-to self-care routine is taking a long walk with my dog listening to an audio book. I also like to get massages.

Q: Favorite “guilty pleasure”?

A: My guilty pleasure is HGTV’s House Hunters International.

Q: Where do you see your career/business headed in five years? Twenty?

A: I see Wana being an international brand, and leading the industry in education and innovation.

Q: As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A: I wanted to be an archeologist.

Q: If you could talk to yourself five years ago, what advice would you give?

A: Think big…and then think even bigger.

Q: What advice do you have for other women looking to get into the cannabis space?

A: I would give women the same advice I would give men: Find a place in the industry where you can excel, and where there’s still open opportunity. Find great partners.

Q: What’s your favorite cannabis product?

A: I love MüV Sports Gel. And I have to say that Wana Brands’ Strawberry Lemonade 1:1 gummies are my favorite.

Q: What’s the one thing you would bring if you were stranded on a desert island?

A: My cellphone, with an endless battery charge.

Q: What do you hope for the future of the cannabis industry?

A: My hope is that everyone has legal and safe access to cannabis. I’m hoping for real medical research to be able to be conducted, so we can understand how to harness the power of the plant. I’m looking forward to cannabis being part of the solution for people who are struggling getting off pharmaceutical drugs, from opioids to sleeping meds to antidepressants.

Q: Fill in the blank: I could never live without ________

A: Friends and family.

Q: What do you think needs to happen before we achieve federal legalization of cannabis?

A: The continuing trend of state legalization of cannabis is important, because it makes the use of cannabis less threatening and it demystifies marijuana. As legalization spreads from state to state, it makes it less frightening. It is truly a grassroots issue and public opinion will lead the way.

Q: What’s your smoking/cannabis consumption ritual, if you do partake in cannabis?

A: I consume cannabis in the evening as a way to wind down from my day.

Q: Best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

A: “You can’t steal second base and keep your foot on first.”
