Bainbridge Island cannabis boutique Paper & Leaf is owned by friends Steve Kessler and Brendan Hill. Steve comes from the medical side of marijuana and can talk terpenes and cannabinoids all day, while Brendan—drummer of the iconic jam band Blues Traveler—has used cannabis as a way to explore music and creativity. These two have been a great team from the beginning, each falling into their own rhythms. Steve had the design vision, and Brendan had the carpentry skills. Much of what you see in the store is their own handiwork.
Located fifteen minutes north of the Bainbridge ferry terminal, Paper & Leaf is a great resource for locals and tourists alike, with services such as a separate medical consulting room for patients, and “Cannabis 101” classes. They even have shuttles that take people to and from anywhere on the island—for passengers walking off the ferry from Seattle, or local patients with mobility issues. Once inside, the aesthetic is airy and modern, with neutral backgrounds and vivid art hanging on the walls. The product display cases are made from glass and recycled pallet wood, with everything lit up by LEDs to set off the glistening trichomes.
Paper & Leaf sources their product from all over the state. And they have great relationships with their vendors, who often use the store’s customer feedback to make improvements and develop new products. Brendan is particularly excited about products like AM Relief and PM Relief from Fairwinds. Though, for personal use, he’s been loving their Bubblegum Kush from Dutchy as a night-time indica. And when it comes to playing music, it’s all about sativa. He says, “When I play or practice, I like a nice sativa—something up, like UK Cheese from Pure Funk. I like it upbeat, when you’re playing music and you get into that flow moment—especially when you’re playing with like-minded people—you can just get right there.”
