Headquartered in Oregon, Pistil Point boasts one of the biggest grows in the Pacific Northwest and a strong foothold in the region. The garden is looking to expand its reach south, however, to the Bay Area. “Circling back to California has always been the plan,” according to the California team, led by Scott Grech, head of operations. “We’re focusing on what’s really important—quality cannabis,” remarks Grech about entering the Bay’s already crowded market. “There’s a lot of cannabis in California, but there is not much consistency.”

Pistil Point is self-funded and has never taken investments, proving the garden has an established brand, which allows Grech and his team to focus on production at a facility located in Oakland’s “green zone.” New to the business side of cannabis, Grech shares that “it’s a bit scary; it’s all new, and there is the financial risk, but coming out of the underground feels good . . . We feel safer without the drug dealer stigma.”

The Product

Pistil Point is best known for their King Louis OG, but Grech’s favorite new strain is called Lemonz, a Zkittlez and DNA Lemon OG Kush cross from an accidental breeding project. Such unexpected surprises, however, are not the norm at the garden. “We don’t experiment to save money,” imparts Grech. “We have it down to a system that we don’t question, but we’re constantly learning.” Regarding their grow process, Travis Sandoval, head of cultivation, shares that their aversion to risk is offset by their commitment to quality: “It’s a lot of work to ‘weed out’ compatibility between strains in our system and style of growing with soil, which can be more demanding, labor-wise . . . It’s not necessarily about the harvest. Some growers shy away from the boutique strains because they produce less [cannabis].”
