Refinery Canna Connoisseur – Portland, OR
This woman-owned cannabis boutique, located on NE Broadway and 27th, is housed in what once was a ground floor garage that stored Mini Coopers. Now the bright white paint of the building exterior and multitude of “garage door” windows beckon cannabis aficionados to the quaint space, brightly lit with natural sunlight and complete with an overall aesthetic that exudes fine taste. The layout is simple — no abrasive flat screens or in-your-face anything, just clean lines and natural wood finishes, creating a space that is comfortable to relax in and explore the fine cannabis offerings for sale. Head there in the morning and enjoy the benefits of Coco Donuts, delivered daily, a benefit of being part of the neighborhood. Or stop by the Refinery before or after enjoying a little Tiki Bar action at Hale Pele, another of their close NE Broadway neighbors.
When I walked into the Refinery for the first time, I was instantly put at ease. The beautiful shelving and glass cases exhibit artfully displayed arrangements of cannabis products. I was not overwhelmed with choices, rather I was drawn towards an individual edible display, that led to another display and another. The Refinery isn’t concerned with having massive amounts of product, they prefer to stock cannabis strains, edibles and concentrates that they are truly passionate about— for example, Resin Ranchers and their OG Peanut Butter Breath. Leif Goods’ “Dynamites” and other goodies, as well as Wyld’s edible line of gummies and chocolates are always on hand. Owner Lily Sadri even sells vintage lighters, sourced from her mother who specializes in acquiring antique treasures.
Sadri, along with her husband Arya, approached the creation of the dispensary with a passionate fervor to create the perfect small-space cannabis shop. With only three budtenders, when you come into the shop, you know who you’re buying from, and the budtenders know you and what you are looking for. You might encounter James, a CBD loving photographer/actor who is known for having “tried it all” and isn’t afraid to tell you about it. Or you might find Alex, the skateboarding, music-savvy budtender. But, what started as a friends, family and neighborhood dispensary, has turned into a destination for cannabis lovers. Even Sadri’s grandmother has found her way to embracing cannabis, vouching for the Leif Goods’ Physic Lip Balm. “Hi Lily, this is Grandma. Could you please save me up some of that marijuana salve … I want to get some before my trip next week. Thank you honey,” reads one text from Sadri’s grandmother. I can’t think of a better endorsement than that of a Grandma.
