Review: Honest Marijuana Co.

Honest Marijuana Co.

The People

We had to travel to the heart of Colorado to get there, but the drive was worth every mile. Upon arrival, the founder and head grower, Anthony Franciosi, was thrilled to give us a tour of his wholesale company and all-natural gardens. An instant sense of kinship could be felt among the employees and everyone welcomed us warmly. In regards to his role at Honest Marijuana, Anthony said, “I brought all the most passionate and skilled people I knew who love this industry and appreciate organic practices together under one roof, and we are working together to create the highest quality products.”

The Product

The quality of Honest Marijuana’s product is unreal. Sure a photograph can probably do some justice, but walking around their garden, smelling and feeling the buds—nothing can compare. Their Girl Scout Cookies, a personal favorite, were some of the best and biggest I’ve ever seen. We used a camera to micro-inspect the trichromes on the Black Dog Kush, which were literally pink and purple—coloring that, in such an early state of the plant, is usually unheard of. Another house specialty is their Sour Diesel. “Sour Diesel is a long time staff favorite. We believe it thrives in our system with plant-based nutrients and full-spectrum lighting. We like for it to go 66 days plus and then cure for at least 14 to bring out the best flavor. In our nitrogen preserved packaging, every batch delivers and it has been testing between 25 and 27 percent THC, so the effect is very nice,” Anthony shared.

The Place

The facility is nestled in the mountains about 45 minutes from Steamboat Springs. I was blown away by their mission to utilize space as optimally as possible, while also employing eco-friendly methods to create their products. Their fertilizer is made from all-natural and organic ingredients like beets, kelp and algae. The lights and cooling setup are highly efficient, and are designed specifically with the elevation in mind. They even have a special dehumidification process that saves hundreds of gallons of water every day for them to repurpose. “Since we are up high in Northern Colorado, we only have 59 frost-free days. Our cooling equipment can utilize any outside air under 40 degrees while still maintaining a closed system. Since the ambient temperature is under 40 degrees most of the year at night and usually four months a year during the day, we can use about 60 percent of the typical cooling load of a similar size facility. By coupling that system with highly efficient lighting and room sizes, we are aiming to be as energy efficient as possible,”Anthony added.

“By collecting and filtering the water that the plants transpire, we are able to recapture hundreds of gallons of water everyday and reuse it for anything. All of our dehumidification equipment is plumbed to reservoirs where we collect the water and filter it before reuse.  When we reuse water for watering plants it can have exponential water savings.” -Anthony Franciosi, Honest Marijuana Founder and Head Grower

Melissa Joy

Melissa was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, where she couldn’t stay out of trouble for smoking weed--especially during college. Immediately after graduating with a business degree from Elmhurst College in 2012, Melissa made her way to the safe smoking haven of Colorado, where her love for live music and music blogging eventually led her to a part-time writing position with DOPE Magazine. Melissa enjoys medicating with indica-dominant hybrids, and will never say no to a big solventless glob. When she isn’t busy writing, Melissa loves spending her time in the mountains with friends, practicing her violin, and exploring the never-ending amounts of dank breweries and restaurants in Denver.
