The future of cannabis is female! December is DOPE Magazine’s Women’s Issue, and we wanted to continue to highlight women across the industry on all of our platforms. We sent a questionnaire to outstanding women in cannabis — some familiar to us, some new — and will be showcasing their answers in individual blogs this month. Today’s story highlights Sarah Remesch, Founder of New Highs CBD.

DOPE Magazine: Who are some of your greatest role models?

Sarah Remesch: People I am closest with. I look inward to find role models and I am lucky to know some incredible people who inspire me in the smallest and most private of ways.

What are the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your career?

Overcoming poor leadership and going with my gut. I learned quickly that leadership and mentorship are important for anyone’s growth. When those pieces lack in the workplace it’s very uninspiring. I’ve made an abundance of rash decisions throughout my career, and as outwardly as I seem to appear confident in those decisions, it was always a challenge to follow my instinct and just take the leap.

What’s something someone would never guess about you?

That I love the outdoors. I grew up in the suburbs and the access to outdoor activities is what I crave most living in Manhattan.

What’s your go-to self-care routine?

Kickboxing and self-care Sundays which includes making dinner at home with friends.

Favorite “guilty pleasure”?

Cheesecake.

Where do you see your career/business headed in five years? Twenty?

For New Highs, I want to expand our product line to include something for all consumer types. In twenty years, I hope we’ve fostered an incredibly diverse culture and brand that is easily accessible to people.

How do you feel about the industry-wide assertion that cannabis is a female-friendly space?

I don’t disagree with it, but I believe in business you need to have balance and balance doesn’t mean that this industry should be women-only. I believe there is an abundance of highly intelligent women in the cannabis space, and right now we have the opportunity to continue to shape the industry, but we should continue to do so by remaining inclusive of all genders and ethnicities.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

That’s easy, a veterinarian!

If you could talk to yourself five years ago, what advice would you give?

Make every single same decision, foster every relationship and know that there is a path while you are overwhelmed in the moment.

What advice do you have for other women looking to get into the cannabis space?

Network, network, network. Find your local community and learn about the other women involved — get to know their stories and figure out how your skills and passions can support the holes in the industry.

Recommend a book, album, and movie you think everyone should read/listen to/watch while stoned!

Listen to Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours” and watch “High Maintenance.”

Best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

“You only have your own reputation.” A college professor said this to me about working in the marketing and advertising industry — the challenges that would come and the pressures that would be presented to potentially make unethical decisions.

What’s your favorite cannabis product?

The Dosist Bliss vape pen.

What do you hope for the future of the cannabis industry?

Access, options and affordability. I want options for myself and options for the older woman who is taking a sublingual for back pain, or the child who has social problems and can use a tincture, or the addict who is recovering. We should all have an opportunity to access this plant when and how we need it and have the option to afford it.

Fill in the blank: I could never live without ________

The people in my inner circle.

What do you think needs to happen before we achieve federal legalization of cannabis?

Additional education. I’m a firm believer that education about a subject is the power for people to understand enough to make a strong decision if they are for or against the matter at hand. The more people that realize the positive benefits of cannabis, the more are likely to support federal legalization.

What’s your smoking/cannabis consumption ritual, if you do partake in cannabis?

I dose three drops of New Highs CBD 700MG every morning before I kick-off my day.
