Trade Show Week in Los Angeles
For those of you not in the adult industry, January is the big trade show month. It includes XBiz360, the XBiz Awards, the Adult Novelty Manufacturing Expo (ANME), AVN Novelty B2B Expo, the Adult Entertainment Expo and the AVN Awards. And honestly there are probably more that I’m forgetting.
This week XBiz and ANME took place in Los Angeles and I made plans to be in town for six days. It was absolutely bonkers and I loved every single second of it. Day one, Tuesday, I was up early to meet Charlo Greene at the Pleasure Chest in West Hollywood. I was scheduled to be a guest on her show, The Weed Show, on Wednesday, and she wanted to get some background footage and pre-interview material. I gave her a tour of the store, discussing lube ingredients and offering toy suggestions for all different bodies and needs. We had so much fun! The next day I battled traffic to get to her studio by 4pm so we could go live on Facebook and YouTube. The interview was powerful—I shared some deep, vulnerable insights into how sex and cannabis literally changed my life for the better. I also shared the contents of my “sex toy to go” bag that I had packed for a private play party later that night. The play party was excellent, as always, and the other attendees were delighted that I’d brought a bottle of Foria for them to try.
Thursday night was the XBiz Awards. The XBiz Awards recognizes excellence in the adult industry, including film, pleasure products, websites and leaders. This year the show was hosted by Ron Jeremy, with a surprise appearance by Flavor Flav. I had a great time walking the red carpet and getting to hang out with some of my favorite people including Nina Hartley, April Flores, Hudsy Hawn, Reid Mihalko, Buck Angel and Ela Darling. My dear friend jessica drake won Sexpert of the Year and I had tears in my eyes listening to her acceptance speech.
Friday was a nice relaxing day that led into the opening cocktail reception at the Adult Novelty Manufacturing Expo (ANME). This was my sixth ANME show (I’ve been going since January 2014 and they happen twice a year) and this time it really felt like coming home. The evening culminated with my friend Adam Lewis, CEO of Hot Octopuss and creator of the world’s first Guybrator™ (the Pulse), telling me he wanted me to be the first person in the world to own their newest offering—the Queen Bee. It’s a vibrator designed for vulvas and the first of their products to be marketed to women. Having the creator of a product give you the first one in the world…wow. I felt fantastic! Then I went home and used it and…wow. Deep, rumbly, uniquely powerful vibrations. I enjoyed it thoroughly. Twice.
It was absolutely bonkers and I loved every single second of it.
Saturday was another day of giddy squeals and big smiles. I had lunch with some of my favorite sex educators (Elle Chase, Tristan Taormino, Buck Angel, Siouxsie Q), then Tristan, Elle and I made our way to the Tantus booth to try out their new floggers and spanking bench. My favorite moment of the day was having Tristan flog me on Facebook Live. The exhibition hall closed at six in the evening and everyone made their way to the ANME hosted dinner, cocktail party and dance party. Since I don’t drink, the open bar held no appeal for me, which meant I spent most of the night puffing on my WVapes pen. I’d organized a trip to a strip club in North Hollywood after the cocktail reception was over, so around ten about 15 of us hopped into Ubers and headed to the club. We chose it specifically because it had a smoking patio, allowing us to pass a joint around between sets. Once again, sex and cannabis for the win.
This week I’m headed to Las Vegas for my first AVN experience. I’ll be part of a sex and cannabis panel with on the B2B side on Wednesday, then Thursday I’ll be doing a sex and cannabis workshop for the Adult Entertainment Expo’s “Sex is…” series. Thursday night I’ll be presenting three awards at the O Awards (along with Buck Angel and Dirty Lola), hosted by Sunny Megatron. Saturday night is the AVN Awards, which has been called the “Oscars of porn.” You’ll definitely want to check back next week to read up on all of my Vegas stories!
I’ll leave you with one key takeaway: how I manage to survive weeks like this where it’s totally normal to eat bad food on the go and not get enough sleep. Follow the 1-2-6 rule: For every 24 hour period you should have (at least) 1 shower, 2 meals and 6 hours of sleep. That is how one survives a trade show/conference/week of busy work things.
